Location and History
The D.P. Wijesinghe Children Home is in Gonagalapura near Bentota. In association with 16 other homes, it is administered by the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress.
The Children
The home offers space for 50 girls between the ages of 3 and 20. After first improving the sanitary and hygienic conditions in the home we are now focusing on fostering the children’s development and education. This is of great importance to us personally. The education presents a great challenge due to the sometimes traumatic past of the girls.
To help establish a good foundation we support the children with English, computer science and dance lessons. Additionally, we have enabled the children to design, plant and take care of their own garden. This not only promotes a sense of nature but also develops social skills through learning together and teaching each other new things.
